Sean Pearce, 43, aimed to give his daughter Ava, a devoted Everton fan, a memorable 18th birthday by attending the Merseyside Derby. However, the plan fell apart when the tickets he purchased from StubHub International failed to work, leaving the family unable to enter Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Sean Pearce said: “I’d never normally pay that, but it was for her 18th. She’s a massive Evertonian, and she’s only 18 once.”
Despite paying €1,000 for the tickets, Sean encountered issues immediately after transferring the funds. He was unable to access the tickets and faced unhelpful responses from StubHub’s customer service. Despite being promised a refund, the experience left Ava heartbroken, especially after seeing friends enjoying the game outside the stadium.
Sean Pearce said: “It was Saturday afternoon when the alarm bells started ringing because I couldn’t open the tickets.” He added, “The money isn’t the concern, it’s the heartbreak for my daughter. She even saw friends outside the ground while they were waiting, which just made it worse. She’s going to remember it, and she told everyone she was going.”
StubHub International, which is not authorized by Everton FC, refunded Sean, emphasizing that fraud is rare on their platform and that they have measures in place to protect customers. However, the incident highlights the risks associated with purchasing tickets from unauthorized sellers.
A spokesperson for StubHub said: “Fraud is incredibly rare on our websites, and we have processes in place to protect against it. Under our guarantee, we offer replacement tickets or a refund if anything goes wrong with a ticket. On this occasion, it was not possible to find an alternative ticket and the customer received his money back.”
Everton FC reiterated the importance of buying tickets through official channels to avoid invalid or fraudulent tickets. They maintain a zero-tolerance policy on unauthorized ticket resale to protect fans and ensure fair access.
A spokesperson for Everton FC said: “We have consistently advised supporters to only purchase tickets through official Club channels or authorised resale platforms. Tickets obtained through unauthorised sellers carry a significant risk of being invalid, fraudulent or not delivered.”
This unfortunate incident serves as a cautionary tale for fans to exercise vigilance when purchasing tickets and to rely on official sources to avoid similar disappointments.
