Chelsea’s pursuit of Champions League qualification suffered a significant blow following their defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. The loss, compounded by injuries to key players Estevao Willian and Enzo Fernandez, has left the Blues trailing fifth-placed Liverpool by four points, having played an extra game. This defeat marks Chelsea’s fourth consecutive league loss without scoring, a record not seen in 28 years.
Liam Rosenior said: “Tonight was a really difficult result to take. They’ve had one shot on our goal when we’re down to 10 men off an injury, and they score. Then we have wave after wave of attack, crosses in the box, moments that we don’t take advantage of. We have to keep working. We have to turn this around.”
The injury woes for Chelsea have intensified with Estevao Willian and Enzo Fernandez both sustaining injuries during the match against Manchester United. Estevao, who pulled up after chasing a lofted pass, left the pitch in tears, with Rosenior later confirming a hamstring issue. Meanwhile, Fernandez was substituted after landing awkwardly, with concerns over a calf problem.
Liam Rosenior said: “He was crying at half time; it was really devastating for him. It looks like it’s his hamstring and that has happened in a moment when he’s running through on their goal for a one-v-one chance – he pulls his hamstring in that moment.”
Liam Rosenior said: “I just saw him in the dressing room – I think it was his calf. I’m hoping it’s cramp; he’s getting work on it right now because we want him, obviously, fit for Tuesday [against Brighton and Hove Albion]. He ran himself into the ground for the club tonight and I expect nothing different from a man of his stature and quality.”
The potential return dates for both players remain uncertain, though there is hope that Estevao could return to face Brighton next week. Chelsea’s injury list also includes Reece James, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury, though fears of a season-ending absence have been eased. Levi Colwill is back in training but still weeks away from match fitness, and Jamie Gittens faces a longer recovery following a fresh hamstring injury requiring minor surgery.
Liam Rosenior said: “Reece is getting along really well, but he’s not ready yet. I don’t know [in terms of a return date] yet.”
Liam Rosenior said: “It’s great to have Levi back in full training, but it’s going to take him a few more weeks to tick those boxes before he’s ready [to feature].”
Liam Rosenior said: “Unfortunately, he had his scan and needed a minor operation. Nothing too serious… that’s a matter of weeks.”
Chelsea’s next fixture against Brighton on April 21 will be crucial as they aim to recover from this challenging period and reignite their Champions League ambitions.
