Tottenham Hotspur’s relegation fears intensified following a narrow defeat to Sunderland, leaving them perilously close to dropping into the Championship. The match, which marked the debut of new head coach Roberto de Zerbi, ended in disappointment as a deflected goal by Nordi Mukiele sealed the victory for the Black Cats. This result leaves Spurs two points adrift of safety, with their next challenge being a home game against Brighton, de Zerbi’s former club.
Gary Lineker said: “Spurs are two points below the safety net and they’re in trouble. It wasn’t a very good goal, there wasn’t much in it, I’m not sure which team was better than the other. The goal was very fortuitous. There wasn’t much created in the game. Now if you’re going to be in a nervous situation, I think Tottenham are probably more nervous than Arsenal. They played those three (Kolo Muani, Solanke and Richarlison) so that’s a positive start. You could see there was an energy and you could see the players were trying, there’s no lack of effort there. It’s been sucked out of them. It wasn’t a great game.”
Lineker continued: “Romero collided with his own goalkeeper and he’s injured and he’s going off in tears because he cares. The players do, I don’t believe they don’t care. I just think they’re instilled by fear at the moment. The fear of a going down and for a club like Spurs, that would be a humiliation.”
Lineker’s comments highlight the precarious situation Tottenham finds itself in, with the threat of relegation looming large. Despite the efforts of the players, the team appears to be struggling under the weight of expectations and the fear of dropping out of the Premier League. The upcoming fixture against Brighton will be crucial for de Zerbi’s side as they seek to claw their way out of the relegation zone. The pressure is mounting, and the team must find a way to overcome their fears and secure vital points in the weeks ahead.
