Chido Obi, a promising talent from Manchester United’s academy, recently featured in the U21s’ 4-2 defeat to Real Madrid at Old Trafford. The match, part of the Premier League International Cup quarter-final, was classified as a ‘Grade A game’ by United, emphasizing its importance and the opportunity it presented for young players to showcase their abilities against top-tier opposition.
Adam Lawrence said: “When a coach is tough on players, or they spend more time with them, it means that they really, really believe in the player.”
Adam Lawrence continued: “His level of progression and performance will dictate what happens in the summer. I think for Chido, it’s maximising between now and the end of the season, all the opportunities that he’s going to get. Pre-season is when the first-team staff will look at players and then decide what is best for them. We’re trying to prepare every player for the first-team environment. If he made that much progress or he got to that stage, then obviously the first team would make that decision. A lot can happen between now and pre-season. It’s probably not an easy one to answer in black and white, but there’s definitely going to be opportunities there for him. It would just be where his game is at that specific time to dictate what happens next.”
Despite a strong start to the match, United struggled to maintain their momentum, and Obi’s performance was indicative of areas that need development. While he won the penalty for Shea Lacey’s goal, his overall impact on the game was limited, particularly in terms of off-the-ball work. This has been a recurring theme in his performances this season, highlighting the need for further growth before he can be considered for the first team.
Obi’s journey through the academy has seen him improve significantly, especially in his off-the-ball contributions, as evidenced by his standout performance against Manchester City in the Under-18 derby. However, the match against Real Madrid presented a sterner test, exposing some of the deficiencies that need addressing.
As United prepare for the upcoming pre-season, Obi is expected to have a chance to impress the first-team staff, especially with several senior players occupied with international duties at the World Cup. However, a loan move appears to be the logical next step for Obi’s development. Given the physical demands of the Championship, a stint in a European league with a lower tempo, such as the Eredivisie, could provide the ideal environment for the young striker to refine his skills and gain valuable experience.
