Riccardo Calafioris
Riccardo Calafiori provided a strong response to Arsenal’s critics following the Gunners’ 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg. The defender, who recently faced disappointment with Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup and Arsenal’s exits from the League Cup and FA Cup, shared his thoughts on the challenging weeks leading up to the match.
Riccardo Calafiori said: “Last couple of weeks, I would say, have been tough but that is the beauty of football. It is 100 per cent better now. This chance to play three days later rather than just stay home and think about it. Of course I’m really disappointed but I’ve got a lot to play for with Arsenal and I’m really enjoying it.”
Despite the setbacks, Calafiori expressed optimism about Arsenal’s prospects, particularly after the crucial win over Sporting CP, secured by a late goal from Kai Havertz. The victory marked a return to form for the Gunners, aligning with manager Mikel Arteta’s emphasis on the team’s identity.
Riccardo Calafiori said: “To win is the best way to get back on track. That was a clear demonstration of our identity, which maybe we lost a little bit in the last couple of games. But we came back as I like, I recognise my team again, you know. We are happy.”
Calafiori also addressed the external criticisms that have surrounded the team throughout the season. He remained unfazed by the negative commentary, focusing instead on the club’s rich history and the love it garners from fans worldwide.
Riccardo Calafiori said: “I don’t think about it too much. I just know they love to speak about us. It’s obvious that it’s a massive club with so much history that they love to speak about us. But it doesn’t change anything for me.”
Looking ahead, Arsenal faces Bournemouth in their next Premier League fixture. A win could extend their lead over title rivals Manchester City to 12 points, a crucial advantage as they continue their campaign.
Riccardo Calafiori said: “Every game is – hopefully – really important now until the end of April and also hopefully the end of May. We will play at our stadium, our home, we know how to play in the Premier League, and now we must rest and then think about Saturday again.”
Calafiori’s comments reflect a resilient mindset, emphasizing the importance of each game as Arsenal aims to maintain their momentum in both domestic and European competitions.
