Sunderland AFC is undergoing a significant leadership transition as David Bruce, the club’s Chief Business Officer, is set to depart this summer. Bruce has been a pivotal figure in the club’s development, and his departure marks a new chapter for Sunderland AFC. Tom Burwell, a non-executive director on the club board, will assume the role of interim CEO until a permanent appointment is made.
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said: “His connection to Sunderland is profound, and that has been reflected in the care, dedication, and energy he has brought to the role. He should be immensely proud of the part he has played in helping move the Club forward. As our leadership structure evolves to reflect our continued growth in the Premier League, we will now appoint a permanent Chief Executive Officer to help consolidate and build on the progress we have made. During the interim period, Tom will step into this role, having already played an active part in our transition to the Premier League. His leadership will ensure continuity and keep us firmly focused on the path ahead.”
David Bruce said: “To have had the chance to play a part in the story of my boyhood Club has been a privilege I will carry with me forever. More than anything, I hope we have helped reconnect the Club with the people who define it and the city to which it belongs. I leave proud of what we have built, grateful for the people I have worked alongside, and certain that the Club can reach even greater heights.”
David Bruce has been instrumental in Sunderland’s off-field progress, supporting its return to the Premier League since July 2023. His efforts have strengthened the club’s relationship with supporters both locally and internationally, embedding the ‘Til the End ethos that reflects Sunderland AFC’s resilience and pride. During the transition, Bruce will remain with the club to ensure a smooth handover to Tom Burwell, who is well-acquainted with the club’s operations as the CEO of Bia Sports Group.
Tom Burwell’s interim leadership is expected to maintain continuity and focus as Sunderland AFC continues its Premier League journey. His familiarity with the club and its stakeholders positions him well to oversee this transition period effectively. The recruitment process for a permanent CEO is underway, aiming to build on the progress achieved under Bruce’s tenure.
