Manchester City celebrated their ninth League Cup victory with a 2-0 win over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium. However, the triumph was bittersweet for Marc Guehi, who was unable to participate in the final due to registration issues. Despite being a recent signing, Guehi was ineligible to play as he was not registered before the first leg of City’s semi-final against Newcastle United. The central defender expressed his disappointment on social media, sharing a video of his teammates celebrating the trophy lift.
Pep Guardiola said: “Hopefully we can convince the Carabao Cup (EFL) that Marc can play the final. I don’t understand why he cannot play the final. Hopefully we make a letter. You buy a player for a lot of money and he is not able to play for a rule. I don’t understand. Hopefully they can change it. It is difficult to understand.”
In Guehi’s absence, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nathan Ake were entrusted with leading City’s defense. The duo delivered an impeccable performance against the Premier League leaders, showcasing their defensive prowess. City’s victory was further bolstered by a stunning brace from Nico O’Reilly, who impressed with his dynamic runs from left-back, stealing the spotlight in the process.
Pep Guardiola said: “For James [Trafford] it was the first final he played, [Abdukodir] Khusanov just a year here, Nico O’Reilly has impressed me in his first full season and Antoine [Semenyo] played his first final. There are many players who have had a first experience but that is good, that’s what we need. That tells us okay we can do it. Still we are much better than last season but not the team we should be. That requires time. Hopefully next season and the end of this season we can do it.”
The match highlighted the depth and potential of City’s squad, with several players experiencing their first major final. Guardiola’s comments underscored the team’s progress and the promise of further development. While the absence of Guehi was a notable setback, the performance of the squad members who stepped up in his place demonstrated City’s resilience and capability to adapt to challenges.
The victory not only marked another trophy for Manchester City but also served as a testament to the team’s ongoing evolution under Guardiola’s leadership. As they continue to build on their successes, the focus remains on refining their performance and achieving the high standards set by the club.
