David Moyes has expressed his disappointment regarding Everton’s upcoming three-week break, which he believes disrupts the team’s growing momentum. Following a commanding 3-0 victory over Chelsea, Everton is poised for a significant clash against Brentford in mid-April, a match that could influence the race for the top six and European qualification. However, the extended pause in fixtures has left Moyes concerned about maintaining the team’s current form.
David Moyes said: “I’m actually a bit disappointed that there is a break now because I think we’ve got a bit of confidence and I think we’re playing with a bit more self-belief and you can see it.”
Despite his frustration, Moyes acknowledged some potential benefits of the break. He noted that James Garner would gain valuable experience with the senior England camp, while the hiatus offers recovery time for players like James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite, who missed the Arsenal game due to injury but participated against Chelsea. Additionally, Carlos Alcaraz is nearing a return from a muscle injury, and players on the fringes of the squad, such as Nathan Patterson and Adam Aznou, will have opportunities to gain minutes with their national youth teams.
David Moyes conceded: “I would have probably liked to have games, the way we’re playing at the moment. I’d just like to keep it going.”
The extended break comes after Everton’s early exits from the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, which Moyes admitted has contributed to the current situation. With several matches rescheduled to midweek, the manager highlighted the challenges of maintaining rhythm amidst sporadic fixtures.
David Moyes said: “I’ve got to say it’s really difficult as the manager because we’re just off a break and then we’re onto another one again. We all quite look forward to the international breaks because it gives you a breather and it’s the way it is now. But then to have a week added on to that as well – this is our third big-ish break, probably the last one before the end of the season now. It’s made it difficult. But I blame ourselves because we got knocked out of the cups, so there is nobody else we can blame – but we’ve had a lot of games moved to midweek as well.”
As Everton prepares for the final stretch of the season, Moyes remains focused on leveraging the team’s current confidence and form to make a strong push for European qualification. The upcoming match against Brentford will be crucial, not only for Everton’s aspirations but also for the broader competition among clubs vying for top-six positions.
