Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who joined from Benfica for a staggering £106 million in February 2023, has spoken about the team’s current challenges and objectives. With eight Premier League matches remaining and the FA Cup in sight, Fernandez stressed the importance of maintaining focus. Reflecting on a recent match where Chelsea conceded three goals in the final 15 minutes, he highlighted the impact of small details at this level of competition.
Enzo Fernandez said: “I don’t know. My focus is here for now. We have eight Premier League matches to play and the FA Cup. In the first leg, we lost focus in the final 15 minutes and conceded three goals, and here it happened at the very start. At this level, you can’t concede two goals so quickly because of small details.”
Fernandez added: “Since I arrived at Chelsea, we have already passed through similar situations and we were able to turn them around. Now, our focus must be on winning the FA Cup and achieving our goal of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.”
Following Chelsea’s recent game, manager Liam Rosenior addressed Fernandez’s comments during a press conference at Cobham training ground. Rosenior, who had not seen the interview initially, took the opportunity to clarify the situation and express his confidence in Fernandez’s commitment to Chelsea.
Liam Rosenior said: “He’s one of the captains of the club. What I would say is that he made it really, really clear to me how happy he is here at this club, how much he wants to win, how passionate he is for us to be successful. And he also said that in translation and in emotion, things get misconstrued in what he said.”
Chelsea has faced a challenging period, losing their last three games and going nearly two weeks without a victory. Rosenior acknowledged the difficulties but remained optimistic about the team’s resilience and potential for growth.
Liam Rosenior added: “When you lose games, there’s always damage attached to it. I’m learning about the team, the players, and the staff. I’ve learned a lot this week. Every manager goes through difficult weeks. I’ve had challenging periods before. I’ve lost games in many jobs, like all managers have done. What I’ve seen, not just today, yesterday, after the game, during the game where we were down to 10 men in the last minutes was not a lack of effort.”
Despite recent setbacks, both Fernandez and Rosenior remain focused on the club’s objectives, with a strong emphasis on securing a spot in next season’s Champions League and making a successful run in the FA Cup.
