Aston Villa’s hopes of securing a Champions League spot took a hit as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United. The match saw Villa’s midfielder level the score after Casemiro’s opener, only for United to regain control and secure victory with goals from Benjamin Sesko and another in the second half. Despite a spirited performance, Villa’s aspirations were thwarted by missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Unai Emery said: “It’s still in our hands. When we were in a very good run, we were so confident and it was difficult to lose. Now we are in a bad moment and we have to keep the balance, like we are doing. On Thursday we recovered some momentum in Lille. Today we extended it in some aspects of the game but against Manchester United, we have to do more, we have to show more to beat them here. Now, the balance is important. Why? The league is 38 matches and how we are, overall, is fantastic. More than we expected at the beginning of the season. We are, however, losing strong opportunities to achieve the objective we want to get in the Champions League positions. We were for a long time there, but United overcame us. Liverpool are close and Chelsea, we still have a gap to keep. But we must get better and stronger than we are showing in the last matches. I am positive because we are working and the players are aware how we want to keep it, the position we are in. There are still a lot of matches to play. I want to play. I don’t want to finish the season. I am so, so motivated with the team. We are very motivated. We played fantastic on Thursday and I like the challenges we have now in front.”
Unai Emery continued: “My expectation was to perform on the field. Perhaps we could have done even more. When they had the ball, they could threaten us, but we defended well. It was equal, and we felt good. We needed a bit more offensively while continuing to dominate our positioning. In the second half, we lost that control, and they scored from a set-piece. It can happen. After that, we reacted fantastically. When we drew, we wanted to stay calm and maintain our positioning. During emotional and exciting moments, we created a great chance to score with Tammy Abraham, but we conceded from a transition after losing the ball. Reacting after that was more difficult. Overall, we did many things well, but it wasn’t enough. After some fantastic months, we have struggled more in the last two months. We are recovering confidence and working again on our structure. The players are feeling better. Today, the result was as I expected. They are in good form and played an intelligent match. The result was bad, but we must analyze it for Thursday and then Sunday.”
Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, expressed both optimism and concern following the defeat. He acknowledged the team’s recent struggles but remained confident in their ability to recover and push for a top-four finish. Emery emphasized the importance of maintaining balance and learning from experiences as the season progresses. Despite the setback, Villa remains in contention for a Champions League spot, with upcoming fixtures providing opportunities to regain momentum.
