Chelsea is grappling with injury concerns as they prepare for their upcoming Premier League clash against Newcastle United. The young duo of Estevao and Levi Colwill have been sidelined for several weeks, raising questions about their availability for the rest of the season.
Liam Rosenior said: “Este still a little bit further away. We want to be careful with Este because of the nature of his hamstring injury. We don’t want it reoccurring at a crucial stage of the season. We’ll see what he’s like for Tuesday’s game against PSG.”
Estevao, the Brazilian prodigy, has been out of action since Chelsea’s 2-2 home draw against Leeds United, where he played 64 minutes. Despite initial hopes that he might feature against Newcastle, further assessments have ruled him out of the lineup. The club is exercising caution to prevent any recurrence of his hamstring injury, with a potential return eyed for the home game against Paris Saint-Germain on March 14.
Liam Rosenior said: “Yes, he could [be back before the end of the season] but it’s step by step and I don’t want to make promises that I can’t keep. At the moment, Levi’s in a really good place. He’s on the right track but I don’t want to put pressure on him.”
Levi Colwill, who suffered a knee injury shortly after Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph, was initially not expected to return this season. However, recent updates from Rosenior suggest that the central defender might make a comeback in the final stages of the season. Colwill’s rehabilitation is reportedly progressing well, and a return in April or May is now a possibility.
These injury updates are crucial for Chelsea as they navigate a challenging fixture list, including key matches against top-tier teams like PSG. The club’s cautious approach aims to ensure that both Estevao and Colwill can contribute effectively once they return to full fitness.
