In 2017, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp expressed interest in acquiring Julian Brandt from Germany, prioritizing him over other options. However, Liverpool ultimately chose Mohamed Salah, a decision that has proven successful with Salah’s remarkable goal-scoring record. Former Liverpool director of research Ian Graham highlighted the decision-making process in a BBC documentary, noting the data-driven analysis that favored Salah.
Ian Graham said: “Jurgen’s preferred option for that summer was Julian Brandt, who was a great player. We agreed that Brandt was a very good young player but not a standout in the same way that Mo was. From our data analysis point of view Mo was the best young wide forward in Europe, full stop. Roma were under pressure to sell because their finances were not in a good place, so we knew he was available for a good price. He played a forward and wide role that we needed to fill at the time, whereas Brandt was more of an attacking midfielder. It’s to Jurgen’s credit that he engaged in that debate in an honest way with his eyes open to say: ‘Okay, I’m open to be convinced, show me that Mo is better.’”
Brandt, who has played 298 games for Borussia Dortmund, is set to leave the club when his contract expires this summer. Known for his versatility, Brandt has played in various positions, including central attacking midfield and both wings. His style is often compared to that of a playmaker, excelling at creative passing and decision-making in the final third.
Despite his strengths, Brandt’s statistics in the Bundesliga suggest that he might not be a standout in the Premier League. His total distance covered per 90 minutes is lower than many of his peers, and his successful dribbles and passes in the final third also rank him lower compared to Premier League leaders. However, Brandt’s ability to retain possession and his experience in high-pressure games could make him an attractive option for Everton, especially if they qualify for European competitions and need to expand their squad depth.
Brandt’s potential move to Everton could provide the club with a seasoned player capable of adding depth and creativity to their midfield. As Everton looks to bolster their squad, Brandt’s experience and versatility might offer the Toffees a valuable asset at a reasonable price.
