Dan Neil
Dan Neil, former Sunderland captain, recently shared insights into his decision to leave the club and join Ipswich Town on loan in January. Neil, who played a pivotal role in Sunderland’s promotion last season, struggled for regular playing time upon the club’s return to the Premier League. The loan move to Ipswich was structured to benefit both parties, allowing Neil to concentrate on Ipswich’s promotion ambitions.
Dan Neil said: “I think it suited both me and the club the way the deal is structured. There’s one goal in mind, and that’s to get promoted, then we’ll see what happens after that. Hopefully, we do get that promotion, finish top two, and (staying longer) is an option. Whatever happens in the summer, happens in the summer.”
Neil’s departure marked the conclusion of a significant chapter at Sunderland, where he had been a key figure since joining the club’s academy as a youngster. A lifelong Sunderland supporter from South Shields, Neil captained the team during last season’s play-off final victory, which secured their return to the top flight.
Dan Neil continued: “Obviously, it was a tough decision to make, but one that I’ve made and quite quickly came to peace with. I think, in a weird way, it was quite a nice way for it to end, being a big part of getting the club back to where I believe they belonged.”
Despite his limited playing time this season, Neil expressed satisfaction with Sunderland’s progress in the Premier League. He acknowledged the competition for places in the team, noting the quality of the new midfielders brought in by the club.
Dan Neil added: “Yeah, my minutes lacked this season, and that’s something I was disappointed with, but at the same time, we brought in some great midfielders that were doing really well. I think every footballer knows you can’t going banging on the manager’s door every week when the team’s playing really well.”
Neil had multiple options during the January transfer window but ultimately chose Ipswich Town, believing it offered the best opportunity for another promotion push. He was particularly drawn to the club’s style of play and the role he envisioned for himself within the team.
Dan Neil explained: “The thrill of trying to get a club promoted from the Championship, there’s not many feelings like it in football. When I looked at the options I had, I thought Ipswich, in terms of a squad, had one of the best. When I looked at that Ipswich team that got promoted from the Championship, I could see myself in that role that I’m playing now. The gaffer’s style of play and system here fits with what gets the best out of myself.”
As Ipswich Town continues its quest for automatic promotion, Neil emphasized the unpredictable nature of the Championship, warning that no opponent can be underestimated.
Dan Neil concluded: “In the Championship, there are no easy games. You can go and beat someone in the top six and then go and drop points against somebody in the relegation zone. Every single game is a tough game. This one is probably a little bit more dangerous because they have got a really good team and some fantastic individuals, the front four especially. It’s a game where we’re going to have to be 100% at it.”
Neil’s journey with Ipswich represents a new chapter in his career, with the midfielder eager to contribute to the team’s success and potentially secure a permanent move in the future.
