Aston Villa, under the management of Unai Emery, are set to return to France for the third time since his tenure began. Previously, the team faced Lille in the 2023/24 Conference League and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last season. This time, they prepare to meet Lille once more, with the dynamics surrounding the match having shifted significantly since their last encounter.
La Voix du Nord reported: “Back then, the context was quite different, as Lille were trailing by a goal at kick-off. The sporting dynamic was also different. In April 2024, Lille had just dominated Lens and Marseille to establish themselves as strong contenders for Champions League qualification. Almost two years later, they do not display the same winning mentality ahead of hosting Aston Villa.”
A local fan commented: “Understandable. We’re already bored stiff on the weekends, so if on top of that we have to add this during the week… not much excitement about this ‘team’ and the club in general, which gives us zero emotions…”
Another fan added: “It’s a matter of hype, of the game on offer, of a team close to the fans, of what it gives off. + Over 40K spectators that’s still huge. Villa last time something was happening. Here the team doesn’t give off much.”
A third fan remarked: “I won’t hold it against those who are fed up with spending their money to watch this team.”
The previous encounter between Aston Villa and Lille in April 2024 saw Villa triumph in a penalty shootout, with Emi Martinez playing a crucial role by saving two penalties. His performance echoed his earlier heroics for Argentina in the World Cup against France in December 2022. Despite being booked during the shootout, Martinez remained on the field and became a pivotal figure in Villa’s victory.
At that time, Lille were riding high, having recently defeated Lens and Marseille, which positioned them as formidable contenders for Champions League qualification. The atmosphere at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy was electric, with 47,093 fans in attendance. However, the current scenario paints a different picture. As of three days before the upcoming match, ticket sales have reached between 38,000 and 40,000, including approximately 2,600 Aston Villa supporters. This season, Lille’s home attendances have varied, reflecting fluctuating fan engagement.
Lille’s recent form has been mixed. They were held to a draw at home by Lorient, ending a streak of three consecutive wins. Prior to this unbeaten run, Bruno Genesio’s side had managed just one win in ten games. The current match against Aston Villa will test Lille’s resolve as they seek to recapture their previous form and enthusiasm from their supporters.
