Arsenal currently holds a seven-point advantage over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings, albeit having played one more match than their closest rivals. The upcoming fixture between the two clubs at the Etihad Stadium on April 18 is poised to be a pivotal moment in the title race. Last season, Arsenal’s campaign was hampered by injuries to key players such as Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Takehiro Tomiyasu, all of whom experienced extended periods on the sidelines.
Declan Rice said: “Last year, the injuries killed us. We have an amazing squad this year. Players you can rely on in every position. Also, there’s a calmness. You go in every day, you see the boys. It’s not all serious. It’s calm, it’s relaxed. It’s like a family. You’re going in, everyone’s in their early 20s, no one’s really above 30. Everyone’s vibing. It’s a nice group to be around. We have such a good set of staff all around the building, every department. So everything’s been really good from start to start to now. We’re getting into the business end, which is the most important part now.”
Mikel Arteta said: “Well, they had issues and they’ve been carrying issues. And the amount of games that we are playing, it’s obviously super demanding. It was the only time to try to make sure that we can clean those issues that they’re having to start the next sequence of two weeks before the break in the best possible way. Both of them, they had little niggles. And I knew that this could be a possibility, especially in the conditions that we’re playing today. So we had to take them off.”
Despite the challenges posed by injuries, Arsenal’s squad depth has been a significant asset this season. Declan Rice, who was rested alongside Gabriel and Martin Zubimendi for Arsenal’s recent FA Cup victory over Mansfield Town, emphasized the improved squad dynamics and the relaxed atmosphere within the team. Rice’s comments highlight the importance of having a reliable squad in every position, which has contributed to Arsenal’s strong performance this season.
Manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to rest key players was a strategic move to manage fitness levels amid a demanding schedule. With the title race heating up, ensuring players are in optimal condition for the crucial fixtures ahead is paramount. Arteta’s approach reflects the need to balance immediate performance with long-term success as Arsenal aims to maintain their lead in the Premier League.
