Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City saw the Gunners secure a crucial three points in their Premier League title race, thanks to Bukayo Saka’s decisive goal just nine minutes into the match. Despite Arsenal’s strong defensive performance, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler offered a contrasting view, expressing his discontent with the methods employed by Arsenal at the Amex Stadium, particularly criticizing their time-wasting tactics.
Fabian Hurzeler said: “There was only one team who tried to play football today. I ask one question. Did you see a Premier League game, a goalkeeper going down three times? We should focus on our performance, we cannot control these types of things.”
Hurzeler continued: “Very difficult, but we tried hard. We tried to keep the ball moving. We tried to create chances. These types of opponents you can only punish them.”
He added: “Sometimes they spend one minute to take a corner if they are leading. I think no-one recognises it, but when Arsenal have a corner and they are leading, sometimes they spend over one minute just to take a corner. Therefore, I think we just have to make clear rules. The game is changing so much.”
Brighton manager Hurzeler’s comments were particularly pointed towards Arsenal’s time management during set-pieces and goal-kicks, which he repeatedly highlighted to fourth official Michael Salisbury during the match. His frustration was further exacerbated by a non-award of a penalty for a challenge on Mats Wieffer by Gabriel Martinelli. Hurzeler’s remarks suggest a broader concern about the impact of time-wasting on the overall spectator experience, advocating for clearer rules to ensure fans receive full value for their money.
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta chose not to delve into Hurzeler’s criticisms, simply responding with, “What a surprise,” when informed of the Brighton manager’s comments. Arteta’s brief response indicated a reluctance to engage in a public debate over the issue.
This victory saw Arsenal extend their lead over Manchester City to seven points at the top of the Premier League table, as City dropped points in a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest. The ongoing title race remains fiercely competitive, with Arsenal’s tactics under scrutiny as they continue their pursuit of Premier League glory.
