Champions League Europa League
Atletico Madrid’s manager Diego Simeone expressed a mix of emotions following his team’s recent triumph over Club Brugge, which secured their place in the Champions League knockout stages. Despite the victory, Simeone emphasized that his focus remains on his team’s performance rather than potential upcoming opponents like Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur.
Diego Simeone said: “There’s a huge amount of work behind these results, which are starting to be more positive than negative. I still get emotional. I’m very proud of the guys. We came up against a team that plays well, that eliminated Atlanta last year… We were better in the second half. Without a doubt, it’s extremely important for the club, both financially and globally, but we want more. Hopefully, we have the ability, the talent, and the energy to go further. We’re not thinking about Liverpool or Tottenham. Getting back to the round of 16 is very important. Let’s see if we can improve and advance. The lads have been playing a ton of games.”
Simeone’s side has had a history with Liverpool, notably knocking them out of the Champions League in March 2020 with a 3-2 victory at Anfield. Since then, Liverpool has had the upper hand in their group stage encounters, winning all three meetings, including a dramatic 3-2 win in September thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s injury-time header. Despite this, Simeone remains focused on his team’s progression and development.
Meanwhile, Kjetil Knutsen, manager of Champions League surprise package Bodo/Glimt, acknowledged the influence of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on his team’s playing style. Bodo/Glimt recently stunned last season’s finalists Inter Milan with a 5-2 aggregate victory, earning them a spot in the round of 16 where they will face either Manchester City or Sporting CP.
Kjetil Knutsen said: “It is a path we have chosen to take, and it is about a lot of things. It is a clear identity. It requires tough training, that you work on the field functionally and at high intensity as often as you can. Also, the rhythm of the match will always be decisive in that regard. It is inspired by many, including Klopp and Liverpool, who we look to mirror in many ways.”
The Champions League draw for the round of 16 is set to take place on Friday, February 27, at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, starting at 11 am UK time. This draw will not only reveal the next round’s matchups but also outline potential paths to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final. As the competition intensifies, teams like Atletico Madrid and Bodo/Glimt will be eager to continue their impressive runs and make a mark on the European stage.
