Everton’s struggles at home persisted as they extended their winless run to seven games following a narrow defeat at the hands of Benjamin Sesko’s second-half goal. Despite a spirited effort from the hosts, who pushed hard for a breakthrough, the quality needed to secure a win eluded them. The fans at Hill Dickinson Stadium, however, showed their support by applauding the team off the pitch, a stark contrast to the boos that followed previous performances against Leeds United and Bournemouth.
David Moyes said: “I do, yeah, I thought they did well tonight. I thought the crowd did great, I thought the players did great – they have done all season.” He continued, “I’m disappointed with the result. I’m happy enough with the second half performance – I didn’t think we did enough in the first half but overall we lost a really tight game that could have easily gone in our favour.”
Moyes added: “We narrowly beat United at Old Trafford 1-0 and probably shouldn’t have won on the night but held out and got a result. I thought they were a bit fortunate tonight to win the game. I thought we were probably, certainly in the second half, the more likely team [to score]. But we couldn’t get the goal. It’s the quality… the quality which costs big money. We’re just lacking that little bit where we could probably get a goal and we didn’t quite.”
Everton’s defeat was marked by a crucial strike from Sesko, a forward whose transfer fee to Manchester United exceeded £70 million, highlighting the financial disparity between the two clubs. Everton’s leading striker, Thierno Barry, was acquired for less than half that amount, underscoring the challenge Everton faces in competing against financially stronger teams. Moyes acknowledged the role of financial power in acquiring quality players capable of making decisive contributions in tight matches.
Despite the setback, Moyes expressed satisfaction with the team’s second-half performance, noting that the game was closely contested and could have swung in Everton’s favor. The manager’s comments reflect a belief in the team’s potential and the support of the fans, who remained positive despite the ongoing challenges at home.
