Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of returning to winning form were dashed as they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to arch-rivals Arsenal in the North London Derby. This loss leaves Spurs precariously positioned, just four points above the relegation zone, with West Ham United and Nottingham Forest closing in. Newly appointed manager Igor Tudor, who succeeded Thomas Frank, faced a challenging start in his Premier League debut, unable to inspire an immediate turnaround for the struggling side.
Gus Poyet said: “Spurs are in a dangerous position as they head into the business end of the season. I think there is also a little bit of confusion inside the team and obviously yesterday’s game didn’t help. It’s going to be a reaction. It’s a new coach, he’s a character, Igor Tudor, so he’s going to bring something to the team. Even at half time, at 1-1, I was having a bad feeling. I think there are two key things. One is getting the injured players back as soon as possible, the ones that they can. Then win again. It’s too close, and remember that sentence, ‘They are too good to go down’; it has happened to many.”
Poyet further elaborated on the challenges facing Tudor and the team, emphasizing the need for tactical adjustments and improved individual performances.
Gus Poyet continued: “I know him because when I went to Greece in 2015-16, he was the coach of PAOK, I was the coach for AEK, we played one game. I know he’s a very strong coach. But the problem here is not a system, it’s not how you train, it is how you perform as a team, especially in the Premier League, in the last two years we’ve been performing really badly. It could be a decision, it could be a change of playing style, it could even be luck.”
Tudor’s arrival marks his first foray into Premier League management after stints across Europe and two years in Serie A with Lazio and Juventus. Despite his strong coaching credentials, the Croatian faces the immediate task of stabilizing a team that has struggled for form and consistency. Poyet, who has previously encountered Tudor during their managerial tenures in Greece, believes that the issue lies more with the players’ performances than the tactical setup.
The defeat against Arsenal highlighted Tottenham’s defensive frailties, particularly in one-on-one situations, where Arsenal’s players consistently outperformed their counterparts. Poyet pointed out that Tottenham’s defenders struggled to cope with the physicality and skill of Arsenal’s forwards, a critical factor in the derby loss.
As Tottenham navigates the remainder of the season, the focus will be on Tudor’s ability to galvanize his squad, address the defensive weaknesses, and secure crucial points to avoid being dragged further into the relegation battle. With the pressure mounting, the coming weeks will be pivotal for both Tudor and Tottenham in their quest for Premier League survival.
