In a thrilling encounter at the City Ground, Alexis Mac Allister’s stoppage-time goal in the 97th minute earned a vital victory for the visitors, boosting their hopes of securing a Champions League spot. Despite being second best for much of the game, particularly in the first half when the hosts dominated with 12 shots, the Premier League champions managed to snatch a win. Arne Slot expressed his mixed emotions following the dramatic conclusion and shared his thoughts on the team’s performance.
Arne Slot said: “We have to defend a lot of set-pieces so if we brought that mentality to the whole pitch and not lose almost every ball you touch. Then you know these players can do better. You know they play Thursday different in an away game so maybe they ran out of energy. I pointed our second half against Manchester City as well.”
Slot added: “My emotions [at full-time] were emotions of happiness and relief. This is probably the first time I have to do a different post-match press conference than I did throughout all these other games because we did not play a good game, the performance, especially first half, was not as good as others. And we have been on the wrong end of the score when we have played well too many times. So I think we got more than we deserved and a draw would have been a fair result for this game rather than us winning it.”
Slot continued: “You never know if a ball has hit the body and where it ended up and apparently it ended up on his arm. So my emotion is still not everything that happens against us this season.”
The victory was a significant boost for the team’s Champions League ambitions, moving them level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea. However, Slot acknowledged the team’s struggles, particularly in the first half, where they were outplayed by the hosts. Despite the victory, Slot admitted that the performance was not up to the standard he expects from his team, highlighting the need for improvement in future matches.
This result underscores the unpredictable nature of football, where a team can secure a win despite not being at their best. Slot’s candid reflections on the match reveal a manager who is aware of his team’s potential and the areas that require attention. As the race for Champions League qualification intensifies, Slot’s team will need to build on this victory and address the inconsistencies that have plagued them this season.
