In a candid interview, Patrick Roberts shared his thoughts on leaving Sunderland AFC and joining Birmingham City. The former Sunderland star, known for his pivotal role in the club’s promotions, discussed his transition and the emotions tied to his departure. Roberts, who became a fan favorite at Sunderland, initially joined Birmingham on loan before making the move permanent. As Sunderland evolved into a Premier League club, Roberts made the decision to seek new opportunities, despite his deep connection with the club and its supporters.
Patrick Roberts said: “I think once I left, it sunk in a little bit. Then I just started cracking on here at Birmingham. I had conversations here and they were willing to sign me, and I was willing to sign. I think the first six months made it easier, but I always watch Sunderland, all the games, because I’ve still got mates there. Once Birmingham started to ask if I wanted to sign permanently, it kicked in and it was just another step in my career.”
Roberts’ departure from Sunderland marked the end of a significant chapter for both the player and the club. During his time at Sunderland, Roberts was instrumental in their rise from League One, leaving a lasting impact on the club’s history. His move to Birmingham City was a strategic decision, driven by the desire for regular playing time and the opportunity to explore new challenges.
Patrick Roberts said: “Yeah, four years in football seems like quite a long time. Not many players last that long. To spend four years and to do what we did, I’ve got great pride in that and it was what I hoped for when I first went in. It was a difficult time and we had a long way to go, but going in there that was what I wanted to achieve. To achieve that and to leave after achieving that, I found great pleasure in.”
Roberts’ journey at Sunderland was marked by significant achievements and personal growth. His ability to change the course of a match with his skill and creativity endeared him to fans and made him a key figure in the club’s success. Despite the emotional ties to Sunderland, Roberts emphasized the importance of making decisions that align with his career goals.
Patrick Roberts said: “Towards the end it was more down to me. The manager was happy for me to stay and be part of the squad. At my age, and with interest elsewhere, I thought I needed to go and play. I didn’t want to get odd appearances here and there and further down the line have it affect me next year. But they never pushed me out. I wanted to go for myself. They were brilliant and allowed me to do that, which I was thankful for. We split on good terms.”
Roberts’ departure from Sunderland was a mutual decision, characterized by respect and understanding from both parties. While Sunderland continues to search for rhythm in their attack, Roberts’ move to Birmingham City signifies a new chapter in his career, one that builds on the foundation he established at Sunderland.
