Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has called on the club to maintain its support for manager Arne Slot despite the team’s recent struggles. Heskey, who played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s treble-winning 2001 season, believes Slot deserves continued backing at Anfield following his successful campaign last year, which saw Liverpool clinch the Premier League title.
Emile Heskey said: “You’ve got to remember we were all saying how good the in-game changes were and we lauded him for it. We can’t all of a sudden jump on someone’s back when they have a dip. There’s got to be consistency and stick with him.”
He continued: “But he needs to know he’s under pressure and he’s at a club where it’s not if we win, it’s we’ve got to win trophies. In that environment you can’t lose two on the bounce and they’re telling you that. That is pressure and you’ve got to be able to deal with that pressure. They know how to do it, so now’s the time to stand up and be counted.”
Heskey added: “Slot knows he has to win trophies and regardless of whether you’re at Liverpool, Leeds or West Ham, you’re ten games away from being sacked. What does the squad look like? And you judge off that and if you judge off those metrics then it’s not been good.”
Liverpool currently finds itself in sixth place in the Premier League standings, trailing behind Chelsea and Manchester United, who occupy the fourth Champions League spot. The team’s recent underperformance has raised questions about Slot’s future at the club, but Heskey has come to his defense, emphasizing the importance of allowing the Dutch manager to navigate through this challenging period.
Heskey’s comments highlight the pressure that comes with managing a top club like Liverpool, where the expectation is not just to compete but to win trophies consistently. Despite the current struggles, Heskey believes that Slot has demonstrated his capabilities and should be given the opportunity to rectify the situation.
The former England international’s remarks serve as a reminder of the fine margins in football management, where a few poor results can lead to intense scrutiny. However, Heskey’s call for consistency and support suggests that Liverpool’s hierarchy should remain patient and trust in Slot’s ability to turn the season around.
As the season approaches its final months, all eyes will be on Anfield to see if Slot can guide Liverpool back into the top four and secure Champions League football for next season. The pressure is undoubtedly mounting, but with the backing of influential figures like Heskey, Slot may find the support he needs to steer Liverpool back on course.
