Sunderland AFC’s efforts to bolster their squad during the January transfer window faced a significant hurdle as their pursuit of Osasuna’s Víctor Muñoz was met with firm resistance. Despite tabling an initial bid of £17 million, which was later increased to approximately £21 million, the Spanish club refused to enter negotiations, insisting on adhering to the release clause in Muñoz’s contract.
Braulio Vázquez said: “We didn’t even listen to them; we stuck to the clause. It’s also true, and I want to emphasize this, that he’s very grateful to the club. We brought him in from the Primera RFEF (Real Madrid First Division), where he’d only played 40 minutes in La Liga, and we paid €5million. I told him he was going to experience personal and professional growth because it was the right environment, and he’s very grateful. As of today, we’re not considering him leaving, and neither is he.”
Osasuna’s sporting director, Braulio Vázquez, highlighted the club’s stance, emphasizing the importance of the release clause, which is set at £34 million. This valuation reflects not only Muñoz’s potential but also the financial implications for Osasuna, as they are obligated to pass on 50% of any future sale to Real Madrid. Sunderland’s interest in Muñoz underscores their ambition to enhance their attacking options, although the deal ultimately proved unattainable. The Black Cats were not the only ones eyeing the talented winger; Tottenham Hotspur also expressed interest, indicating the growing Premier League attention on Muñoz’s performances in Spain.
**Reinildo Mandava Prepares for FA Cup Challenge at Oxford United**
As Sunderland prepares for their FA Cup fourth-round clash against Oxford United, defender Reinildo Mandava has stressed the significance of the tournament. The FA Cup holds a special place in Sunderland’s history, with their last triumph dating back to 1973. Despite reaching the final in 1992 and the semi-final in 2004, the Black Cats are eager to make a mark once again.
Reinildo Mandava said: “Since I was a kid I watched too much Premier League. FA Cup also. It’s a tough pitch to play there in Oxford. It will be an intense game. The manager talked and explained to us how important this cup is for us and the club. We know it will be a hard, hard game, but we will take all of our guns to go there and fight. Last season we lost there against them. So we have another opportunity to go and show different things and play to win. That’s why we are working every day, we are working to win [the cup]. That’s why I’m telling you that we go there to give everything because we know the importance of this cup for the team and we’ll keep going and fighting until the end.”
Mandava’s reflections on the FA Cup’s importance and the upcoming match against Oxford United highlight the team’s determination to succeed. The Mozambican defender acknowledged the challenge posed by Oxford, especially following Sunderland’s defeat at the same venue last season. Manager Régis Le Bris has already addressed the squad, emphasizing the significance of the tie and urging the team to seize this opportunity to make amends and progress further in the competition.
