Manchester City achieved a significant victory at Anfield, a venue that has long been a challenging ground for the team. With only 15 minutes of normal time remaining, City managed to secure a win against Liverpool, thanks to Bernardo Silva’s instinctive finish and an Erling Haaland penalty. This marked the first time City defeated Liverpool at Anfield with fans present under Pep Guardiola’s management. The team carried this momentum into their next match against Fulham, securing a comfortable win before half-time. The mood further improved when Arsenal dropped points at Brentford, narrowing the gap between the two teams to four points, with a crucial meeting at the Etihad Stadium scheduled for April.
Pep Guardiola said: “I try to knuckle it in the minds of the players that nothing is taken for granted and everything is difficult.” He further added, “The only good news [is] that we go through. That’s all. It would be nice for me to say mentally we’re exhausted, we’re tired. It has been a tough two or three weeks for many reasons but it’s our job. We have to do what we have to do. The calendar says to play every few days.”
Despite the positive results, Guardiola expressed concerns over the team’s mental and physical fatigue. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards, regardless of the opposition. However, the recent performances of some players have not met these standards, potentially missing an opportunity to impress the manager.
Guardiola commented on Phil Foden: “I said many times, I have zero, zero, zero doubts, zero about Phil. He loves fishing and that’s it. When he is that, Phil is back and will be back. It’s not 20 centuries ago when he was the best player in the Premier League. It was around the corner. It was not many seasons ago.”
Tijjani Reijnders and Phil Foden were highlighted as players who missed a chance to shine. Reijnders, who joined from AC Milan, showed promise during the Christmas period but has struggled to adapt fully to English football. His casual approach with the ball and poor decision-making have been noted. Meanwhile, Foden, an academy graduate, has not scored since December and has not reached the high standards he set in previous seasons. Despite Guardiola’s confidence in Foden’s abilities, it seems unlikely he will start against Newcastle United next weekend, with Bernardo Silva, Rayan Cherki, and Nico O’Reilly currently ahead in the pecking order.
The upcoming fixtures will be crucial for Manchester City as they continue their pursuit of the Premier League title. The team must maintain their momentum and address any inconsistencies in performances to remain competitive in the title race.
