Igor Tudor
Igor Tudor has reportedly secured an agreement to take over as manager of Tottenham Hotspur for the remainder of the season, following his dismissal from Juventus three and a half months ago. The former Croatia international is set to replace Thomas Frank, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his playing days at Juventus alongside Antonio Conte, and his coaching stints across Europe.
Antonio Conte said: “Marseille are a really good team, and they have a really good coach who I know very well… Igor Tudor is a friend, we played together for many years in Juventus. We lifted trophies together; at the same time, we also lost trophies together.”
Conte continued: “He’s a really good guy, a strong person, also, as a player, he was really strong. The last time I saw him was when he was an assistant coach at Juventus with Andrea Pirlo. He’s a good friend; sometimes, we message on the phone.”
Conte added: “I am really happy to see him on the bench at an important club in Europe like Marseille. He did very well last season in Verona (coaching Hellas), and yeah, he’s doing a really good job.”
Igor Tudor said: “Antonio, I know him as a human being, as a person. When I came to Juventus, I was only 20, and I found a dressing room with players like him [Ciro] Ferrara, [Paolo] Montero, [Alessandro] Del Piero, players who have value, not only as a player but as a person. He was one of the guys who was always exemplary, not by speaking but by his behaviour.”
Tudor explained: “Then, after I had him as assistant coach, when I went to play at Siena, he was assistant coach to me there for one year. Then, after I started trying to be a coach, he was at Juventus – the first time he was there – he let me see all the training for one week, and I learned a lot from him. Now he’s one of the best in the world.”
Tudor’s appointment at Tottenham marks another chapter in his managerial career, having previously managed teams like Marseille and Hellas Verona. His relationship with Conte dates back to their playing days at Juventus, where they shared triumphs and disappointments, including winning back-to-back Serie A titles and losing the 2003 Champions League final to AC Milan.
The duo’s paths crossed again in the coaching realm, notably during the 2022 Champions League group stages when Tudor’s Marseille faced Conte’s Tottenham. Tudor’s admiration for Conte is evident, as he reflects on the influence Conte had on his own coaching journey. This mutual respect and understanding could play a pivotal role in Tudor’s approach at Tottenham.
Tudor’s experience and tactical acumen will be crucial as he steps into the managerial role at Tottenham, aiming to steer the club towards a successful campaign. With a strong foundation of shared history and professional respect, Tudor’s tenure promises to be an intriguing development for Tottenham fans and the Premier League.
