Dan Ballard
Sunderland defender Dan Ballard has been making waves this season with his impressive performances. As a key player for Sunderland, the Northern Ireland international has become a standout figure in Regis Le Bris’ lineup, contributing significantly both defensively and offensively. His memorable goals against West Ham and Arsenal have further cemented his reputation. Amidst his rising profile, there has been speculation about a potential move to Arsenal, a club he has been linked with recently. However, former player Stefan Schwarz, who has ties to both Sunderland and Arsenal, has expressed his desire for Ballard to remain at Sunderland for the foreseeable future.
Stefan Schwarz said: “Dan Ballard to Arsenal? I love him. He is very strong, hardworking and very honest. He takes his football very seriously, and the way he’s worked on his trade at Sunderland he could go on to a bigger stage but I hope that he stays to bring Sunderland to a bigger stage instead. Sunderland are in a very good situation and if Ballard stays for the next couple of years he can grow as a player and as a person as well. It’s a good club that he can take to the next stage because we don’t know how much the Sunderland owners want to invest into next season. He needs to know the vision for it but I think they have grown from last year and the team will grow again next year. Sometimes you have to be realistic. You can’t grow too fast. You need to make it a little bit more sustainable.”
Ballard’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with former Arsenal talent Freddie Ljungberg also praising his development. Ljungberg, who coached Ballard during his time at Arsenal, was present at the Stadium of Light during the Wear-Tyne Derby and shared his admiration for the defender.
Freddie Ljungberg said: “He [Ballard] is a special man. You know, you have a soft spot for players sometimes… Before I came in there [Arsenal] – I had him with the 21s – some of them maybe didn’t rate him so highly… I was on the pitch for a bit and I was like, ‘I rate him’. He knows how to defend. When you spoke to him, he was like, ‘What can I do better? Could you just help me?’ Every day, he would ask me a question, wanted to get better. He’s had injuries, he’s had massive injuries, setbacks, kept on fighting, had to leave Arsenal, go to smaller clubs, prove himself there. They said here, I think, he’s a legend here already, but he’s been at Millwall and Blackpool, and the fans love him there too. He’s one of those players you want, and you just spoke about Granit Xhaka… Him [Ballard], I want him in our dressing room every day of the week because he will do anything for you. As long as he can win a game, he will do whatever you want.”
Ballard’s journey from Arsenal’s youth setup to becoming a pivotal player at Sunderland highlights his resilience and determination. His ability to overcome injuries and prove himself at various clubs has endeared him to fans and pundits alike. While the prospect of a move to a bigger club like Arsenal is enticing, Schwarz and Ljungberg’s comments suggest that staying at Sunderland could offer Ballard the opportunity to further develop and contribute to the club’s growth. As Sunderland continues to build on their success, Ballard’s role in their future plans remains crucial.
