Sunderland will be looking to uphold their impressive unbeaten home record as they prepare to face Premier League rivals Liverpool at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night. This encounter poses a significant challenge for Sunderland, who have managed to avoid defeat against formidable opponents like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Aston Villa earlier this season. Despite sitting lower in the expected goals (xG) table, Sunderland has demonstrated efficiency in converting the chances they create, making them a formidable force on their home turf.
Regis Le Bris said: “We showed character and personality with and without the ball. It was the game we expected. We knew Arsenal were really well-rounded and have the ability to be impactful from set-pieces and especially after the counter press. We lost two balls and conceded two goals. It doesn’t mean our game wasn’t good. Especially at the beginning of the second half we had a couple of opportunities to be back in the game. We didn’t seize those opportunities and against an opponent like Arsenal if you don’t seize those few opportunities, the game is gone. Absolutely [it’s a different feeling to the West Ham and Brentford games]. The scoreline might be the same but it wasn’t the same game. In this league you have to show resilience. We have another game at home in three days. It’s another exciting challenge and we have to try to be at our best.”
Sunderland’s upcoming match against Liverpool is expected to be a stern test of their capabilities at home. The Black Cats have shown resilience and an ability to capitalize on their goal-scoring opportunities, despite their lower ranking in the xG table. This efficiency has allowed them to secure points against some of the league’s top teams. Liverpool, currently second in the xG standings with 1.75, will undoubtedly provide a formidable challenge. However, Sunderland’s ability to convert chances into goals could prove pivotal in maintaining their unbeaten streak at home.
The match will also serve as an opportunity for Sunderland to bounce back from their recent defeat at Arsenal. As highlighted by Le Bris, the team displayed character and had chances to turn the game around, but failed to capitalize. This upcoming home fixture against Liverpool presents a new challenge and a chance for Sunderland to demonstrate their resilience and tactical acumen once more.
