Marco Silva
Fulham head coach Marco Silva expressed his disappointment after his team squandered an early lead to suffer a 2-1 defeat against Everton at Craven Cottage. Despite taking the lead through a Vitalii Mykolenko own goal in the 18th minute, Fulham failed to capitalize on several first-half opportunities, ultimately allowing Everton to stage a comeback. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall equalized for the visitors in the 75th minute, and a controversial winner followed just eight minutes later, leaving Silva frustrated with both his team’s performance and a contentious refereeing decision.
Marco Silva said: “I don’t go to find excuses. We cannot expect different decisions to go in our favour, we need to look at ourselves and to be more brave, more aggressive in all the moments that we concede the goals.” He continued, “It was a very good first half from us. I think we should have scored four more goals and killed the game and decided it in the first half. We had a number of clear, clear chances to score more goals but you have to be clinical at the level we are playing.”
Silva’s comments reflect his frustration with Fulham’s inability to maintain their first-half dominance. The team had several opportunities to extend their lead but failed to convert these chances into goals. This lack of clinical finishing proved costly as Everton mounted a second-half comeback, with Dewsbury-Hall’s equalizer setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
Marco Silva added: “In the second half, we stopped doing the right things. We expected a normal reaction from a side like Everton, we expected them to take some steps forward, but we stopped doing things that we did so well in the first half. We started to lose control of the game and of course tried to react from the bench, but we lost control of the game and have to blame ourselves, definitely, for the way we lost.”
Silva emphasized the need for his team to maintain their performance throughout the full 90 minutes. He acknowledged that Fulham’s defensive frailties were exposed in the second half, particularly in dealing with set pieces and physical duels, areas where Everton capitalized to secure their victory.
Marco Silva concluded: “When the second half doesn’t go your way, you have to play the other part of the game which is to be strong, defending your box in moments and be stronger in duels and you have to suffer. At the level you are playing, the goals we conceded, we were too soft defending our box. We need to look at ourselves because if you want to prove your quality, you need to do it for 95 minutes, not just for 45.”
The defeat marks Everton’s second victory over Fulham this season, highlighting the challenges Silva faces in ensuring his team can compete consistently at the highest level. As Fulham looks to regroup, Silva’s focus will undoubtedly be on addressing these inconsistencies and instilling a more resilient mindset in his players.
