Liverpool’s current Premier League campaign has been a challenging one, with the team trailing behind Chelsea, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and league leaders Arsenal. Despite their inconsistent domestic form, former Liverpool player Boudewijn Zenden believes that the Anfield atmosphere provides the Reds with a significant advantage in the Champions League. This season, Sky Sports is set to broadcast at least 215 live Premier League games, marking an increase of up to 100 more matches.
Boudewijn Zenden said: “It seems like it always triggers something with the fans and with the players and the whole vibe around the club when playing in Europe is something special. That could just put them in a position where they can actually go all the way. They’ve been there and done it before. They’ve won a few of those Champions League trophies, so they know what it’s like to get all the way. But it’s never easy. It’s never easy.”
Last season, Liverpool showed their prowess in the Champions League by topping the group stage, only to be eliminated on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain, who went on to win the tournament. Zenden suggests that Liverpool’s domestic challenges might serve as a catalyst for their European ambitions, injecting more motivation and hunger into their Champions League campaign.
The Dutchman, who made 47 appearances for Liverpool, emphasized the importance of the Champions League draws for all participating teams. These draws are crucial in determining how far a team can progress in the tournament. Liverpool’s rich history in the competition, coupled with the passionate support from the Anfield faithful, could propel them to another successful European run.
With the Premier League title seemingly out of reach, Liverpool may focus their efforts on securing another Champions League triumph, drawing on their experience and the unique atmosphere that European nights at Anfield bring.
