Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank has addressed the club’s strategy for the remaining days of the winter transfer window, emphasizing the potential for loan signings to strengthen an injury-hit squad. With the transfer window closing soon, Spurs are grappling with a significant injury list that includes key players such as Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur, and James Maddison, among others. The club is also dealing with the recent £35 million sale of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace, which has further depleted their options.
Thomas Frank said: “I think that’s fair. We lost six or seven players inside three weeks in January. There were definitely too many. So yeah, of course it’s weaker than we started with on the first of January.”
Despite the challenges, Frank remains focused on making calculated decisions in the transfer market. Tottenham has already secured the services of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for £34.6 million and 19-year-old left-back Souza from Santos for £13 million. Frank emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and making sensible decisions, even when the situation is less than ideal.
“The best clubs, they take good, calm, sensible decisions, also when it’s a little bit windy, not going as well as we want it to, because that’s key for what we want to build. It’s absolutely key,” Frank stated.
While the club is not pursuing permanent panic signings, Frank acknowledged that loan signings could be a viable option to address the immediate needs of the squad. He noted that the short-term measures should align with the club’s long-term vision.
“We’re still in the market, so it’s not that we are not trying, but it’s just that the short term also needs to be with a long-term view. That’s a big thing,” Frank explained. “A loan that fits and can help us. That’s two different things.”
Frank also highlighted the importance of fan support, particularly in the upcoming match against Manchester City. Despite some challenging atmospheres at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, he remains optimistic about the home advantage and the role of fans in boosting team morale.
“In the Dortmund game, you definitely felt you played at home. That was a fantastic feeling. The fans were fantastic throughout. It also went according to plan and it’s always a little bit easier so it’s more when there are setbacks in games when players and fans, all of us need to be united, together and pushing through that,” he said.
As Tottenham navigates this difficult period, Frank is focused on improving the team’s consistency in performances, which he believes will naturally lead to better results and momentum in the Premier League.
“For me, the most important thing is that we get even more consistent in the performances than the result and then the rest will take care of itself in terms of where we are ending,” Frank concluded.
With the transfer window deadline looming, Tottenham’s strategy will be pivotal in determining their ability to overcome the current injury crisis and improve their standing in the league.
