AFC Bournemouth has taken a significant step towards securing its long-term future in the Premier League with the submission of a full planning application for the expansion of Vitality Stadium. The proposed development aims to increase the stadium’s capacity to over 20,000, ensuring it meets modern standards and supports the club’s aspirations for sustained growth and top-half league finishes.
AFC Bournemouth said: “For AFC Bournemouth, a stadium that fails to meet modern standards would hinder the Club’s ability to sustain Premier League status and pursue long-term growth. These requirements form the basis for the design and location of the proposed development.”
The club has outlined plans to take control of the car park surrounding Kings Park and has already received approval for enabling works, which include laying the foundations for the new south stand. A fanzone is also set to be constructed in the southwest corner of the ground, enhancing the matchday experience for supporters.
AFC Bournemouth stated: “Additional capacity is desired for the start of the 2026/2027 Premier League Season (August 2026). However, the project will be phased over a broadly 2–3-year period to minimise disruption to football matches during the football seasons. The project programme has been specifically constructed to avoid playing any home games at an alternative venue while construction is underway.”
The expansion will see the addition of 1,700 seats in the east stand and 1,200 in the north stand. However, the most significant increase in capacity will come from the new south stand, which will replace the existing 2,320 seats with approximately 6,800, including 60 elevated wheelchair spaces. This development is central to the club’s vision of creating a modern, high-quality stadium that enhances the matchday experience and adheres to operational, safety, and anti-terrorism considerations.
AFC Bournemouth concluded: “The scheme design has been informed by AFC Bournemouth’s wider vision for the Vitality Stadium expansion, including the ambition to create a modern, high-quality stadium that would improve the matchday experience, operational, safety and anti-terrorism considerations, the Premier League Handbook and relevant planning considerations for the site. Through ongoing engagement with the Local Planning Authority and statutory consultees, AFC Bournemouth has evolved the scheme and demonstrated the rationale for the location, size, orientation and design of the works proposed.”
This ambitious project underscores AFC Bournemouth’s commitment to evolving its facilities in line with its Premier League ambitions. By expanding the stadium and enhancing amenities, the club aims to provide an improved experience for fans, players, and staff alike, while also ensuring it remains competitive against its rivals.
