Jean-Philippe Mateta
As the transfer window deadline approaches, Nottingham Forest have intensified their efforts to bolster their attacking options. Under the guidance of head coach Sean Dyche, the club has been actively seeking experienced talent to enhance their squad for the Premier League survival battle and their Europa League campaign. In a significant move, Forest have tabled a £35 million bid for Crystal Palace’s forward Jean-Philippe Mateta. Reports suggest that Palace may consider releasing the player if they receive a package closer to £40 million and can secure a suitable replacement.
Sean Dyche said: “Many of our summer signings need time to adapt to the Premier League. We need proven talent to ensure our survival and make progress in the Europa League.”
The pursuit of Mateta highlights Forest’s priority to strengthen their forward line this month. With Chris Wood sidelined and Arnaud Kalimuendo loaned to Eintracht Frankfurt, Igor Jesus has been the primary striker. Although Taiwo Awoniyi remains part of the squad, his future at the club is uncertain. The addition of Napoli loanee Lorenzo Lucca offers some relief, but Mateta’s acquisition would significantly enhance Forest’s attacking prowess.
Clinton Morrison said: “I like Nottingham Forest as a football club. But what makes this strange for me is Mateta says he wants to play Champions League football. Forest are not playing Champions League football as they won’t win the Europa League this season.”
Mateta’s potential transfer to Forest is not without its complexities. The relationship between Forest and Palace has been strained since the summer, following Forest’s entry into the Europa League at Palace’s expense due to multi-club ownership rules. Despite this, Mateta appears open to joining a team embroiled in a relegation battle, with personal terms reportedly not an issue.
The French forward has had a challenging season, scoring eight goals in 23 Premier League appearances, but his recent form has been less impressive. Stats show Mateta ranks 18th out of 50 players for shot conversion rate, with a conversion rate of 14.8% from 54 shots. His xG difference is the worst in the league at -3.97, highlighting his struggles in front of goal. However, Dyche values Mateta’s proven Premier League experience, which could be pivotal for Forest’s ambitions.
Forest’s need for goals is pressing, as they have scored only 23 times this season, with only Wolverhampton Wanderers having fewer. The club aims to remain in the top flight while making a significant impact in the Europa League. Mateta, alongside Lucca, could play a crucial role in achieving these objectives.
