David Moyes
David Moyes faced the media following Everton’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, where his side’s first-half performance left much to be desired. The match, held at Hill Dickinson Stadium, saw Everton trailing at halftime due to James Justin’s goal for Leeds. Despite the initial setback, Moyes’ tactical adjustments and the introduction of returning players Jarrad Branthwaite and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall helped the Blues secure a point.
David Moyes said: “We were really poor in the first half, and it was very difficult to put your finger on why and how, because we were set up for the game and realised how big a game it was for ourselves. But in the second half we got more control, controlled them better than we had in the first half and in the end got a goal from it.”
He added: “I think we couldn’t quite contain Leeds at times in the first half as well as I would have liked. My plan was not to use Jarrad as early [as this], or Kiernan, because Jarrad’s probably not played for eight months. And Kiernan could have probably played 45 minutes, but the idea was not to. So it wasn’t as if these boys on the bench could play, they couldn’t. But I thought they made a big difference when they came on.”
The first half saw Everton struggle to find their rhythm, with Leeds dominating the proceedings and former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin hitting the post. The home crowd expressed their discontent, booing the team off the field at halftime. Moyes, recognizing the need for change, opted for a formation switch and brought in Branthwaite and Dewsbury-Hall, both of whom were returning from hamstring injuries.
This tactical shift proved pivotal as Everton regained control in the second half. Thierno Barry’s fifth goal of the season was instrumental in leveling the score and salvaging a point for the hosts. Moyes’ decision to field Branthwaite and Dewsbury-Hall, despite their recent return from injury, highlighted the manager’s willingness to adapt under pressure.
The draw leaves Everton with much to ponder as they seek to improve their consistency and performance in upcoming fixtures. Moyes’ ability to make decisive changes at crucial moments will be vital as the team aims to build on this result.
