Unai Emery
Aston Villa achieved a significant victory by defeating Newcastle United 2-0 at St. James’ Park, marking a pivotal moment in their Premier League campaign. This win not only broke their 17-match winless streak on Tyneside but also bolstered their confidence as they aim for a Champions League finish. Following a dramatic home loss to Manchester United, Villa’s triumph over Newcastle, coupled with a recent win against Fenerbahce, capped off a successful week for Unai Emery’s squad.
Amadou Onana said: “So this win will definitely give the team some more confidence, and I hope that we will carry on this way. He [Emery] was definitely happy and pleased with the performance. We showed personality and mentality. We know who we are, what we are capable of, and we showed it today. Obviously, it’s been a very long and difficult week traveling to Turkey. I got home at 4am, and it was training the next morning. It’s not easy, but that’s what we get paid for, to go out there and get the job done. That’s what we did.”
Onana continued: “It’s just about trying to perform week in, week out and going out there, putting on the best performance we can and playing to the max of our ability. Arsenal are the clear favourite because they are performing week in, week out and just beating every single team they face. They are clear favourites. We just try to do our best to keep up with them and the likes of City and Liverpool, to stay in that mix. You always want to look up the table and try to challenge those teams in front of us. There’s no point looking backwards.”
Onana added: “People can think whatever they want to think. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. We have our own as a team, we know that we can perform and stay in that mix. Whatever people outside think, it doesn’t really bother us.”
Villa’s recent form has been a testament to their resilience and ambition under Emery’s leadership. The victory against Newcastle United not only provided a psychological boost but also reinforced their position in the top five, with a 10-point cushion. As the Premier League season enters its final third, Villa’s focus remains on maintaining consistency and challenging the league’s elite. With Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool setting the pace, Villa is determined to stay competitive and secure a coveted Champions League spot.
The team’s recent performances have demonstrated their ability to rise to the occasion, even amidst a grueling schedule that included international travel. Emery’s tactical acumen and the squad’s collective spirit have been pivotal in their recent successes. As they continue to navigate the challenges of the Premier League, Villa’s aspirations for a top-four finish remain firmly within reach.
