Mo Salah
Mohamed Salah made his return to Liverpool’s starting lineup this week during their Champions League victory over Marseille. This marked his first start since late November, following a period of absence due to Africa Cup of Nations duty with Egypt. Salah’s absence, coupled with a controversial outburst after being benched for a draw against Leeds United, had fueled speculation about his relationship with Liverpool head coach Arne Slot. However, after clear-the-air talks and an apology to the squad, Salah was back in action, playing a significant role in Liverpool’s recent Premier League win against Brighton.
Arne Slot said: “I always find it uneasy if I leave a player out and even more a player that has meant a lot for this club. You can work with a player for a long time and you have had success with them, but part of my job is making the decision that I think is the best for the team. But that is always an uneasy decision. Not only with Mo but every single player I leave out because of the work they put in. Their quality is enough to play, so it is always uneasy not to play players.”
Arne Slot added: “I think every player knows that a manager needs to make decisions and I think every player 99 out of 100 times is disagreeing with the manager if he doesn’t play. It should be like that because if you don’t have confidence in yourself then it is hard to play in front of 60,000 people. These players should have confidence that ‘I am good enough to play and I should play’. I am not talking solely about Mo, but everyone now. I think it is always hard for any player who is left out because they want to help and show they are able to help the team.”
Salah’s return to the starting lineup comes after Liverpool maintained an unbeaten streak during his absence, highlighting the depth and resilience of the squad. Despite the team’s success, Slot acknowledged the challenges of managing a squad with high-caliber players like Salah, who naturally expect to play. The Dutch manager emphasized the importance of confidence for players, particularly when facing large crowds, and recognized the difficulty any player faces when left out of the team.
Salah, known for his competitive spirit, demonstrated his commitment to the team by addressing previous tensions and reestablishing his role within the squad. Meanwhile, long-term injury absentees Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley, and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined, leaving Slot with ongoing selection challenges as Liverpool navigates a demanding fixture schedule.
