Tottenham Hotspur has found a vital player in Micky van de Ven, with the 24-year-old center-back stepping up as a leader within the squad. Despite reports suggesting dissatisfaction and a hefty £100 million price tag on the Netherlands international, manager Thomas Frank has expressed the club’s intention to prioritize Van de Ven’s future with a new contract.
Thomas Frank said: “He’s very important for us, Micky is a Tottenham player now and for the future. He’s definitely a player we should prioritise. He has what it takes to be an even better player and I’ve no doubt he can help us to get us to where we want to be in the future.”
Frank also addressed speculations about Van de Ven’s happiness at the club, providing reassurance about the player’s contentment and contributions.
Frank added: “I just saw Micky today, he seems very happy, smiling. He was very happy after the game that we won [against Borussia Dortmund] when he was in the changing room after. Micky is an excellent player. He’s a fantastic ambassador for this club. He has potentially had his best season so far. He’s fit, he’s strong, good defensively, he’s growing as a leader, scoring goals as well. He’s a very important player for us this season and for the future.”
While Van de Ven has been a standout performer, Tottenham has been grappling with a series of injuries, impacting their squad depth significantly. The latest setback involves 19-year-old midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who is expected to be sidelined for months due to an ankle injury. This adds to a growing list of long-term injuries, including summer signing Mohammed Kudus and key players like Rodrigo Bentancur, Richarlison, and Ben Davies.
Frank joked: “Some of it is we always need to assess and look at what can we do to avoid some of the injuries. The Bergvall one, how unlucky is that? Some of them are like ‘OK, what’s happening here?’ It seems like we are cursed or something like that! But injuries are a part of football. The next thing we need to look into is how can we make sure the return to play is speeding up, that we do the maximum we can to get the players back as quick as possible.”
With a total of 20 different injuries affecting the squad this season, Frank’s comments reflect the challenges the club faces in maintaining player fitness and availability. As Tottenham Hotspur navigates through these difficulties, securing Van de Ven’s future remains a top priority, given his growing influence and leadership on the pitch.
