Nottingham Forest’s Europa League campaign faced a setback as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Braga at the Braga Municipal Stadium. The loss, marked by a Ryan Yates own goal, has put Forest in a precarious position, needing a win in their final group stage match against Ferencvaros to secure a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the round of 16.
Sean Dyche said: “Disappointed in one minute of madness. It wasn’t a brilliant game and it was a slow pitch. We asked more questions in the second half, get a penalty, miss it and it is 54 seconds of madness. It gave them a lift and we didn’t respond to it. It was a flat game with not a lot of energy.”
Dyche added: “It’s a different group. You want that group to be stimulated. They have trained fantastically well. It didn’t quite happen on the night. It was a slow, cagey game. A game we never looked in trouble. Never dominated as much as we liked. We don’t have a recognised centre forward and that can make it tricky. The reaction was nowhere good enough for a minute or so. We lost the game to a really poor goal.”
He further commented: “You see it happen, they get a lift, the crowd go mad. We knock off for a minute, go chasing the ball, they get lucky with a bobble into the box and that can happen. Then an unfortunate situation for Yatesy. I think the tempo of the game – we got sucked into playing slow. We didn’t really affect the back line as many times as we hoped. We got the penalty, and it is one of those games if you seal that.”
The match saw manager Sean Dyche make seven changes to his starting lineup, a decision influenced by the upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford. However, the absence of a recognized striker, with Igor Jesus sidelined due to a knock, left Forest struggling to find their rhythm. Despite creating opportunities, including a missed penalty, the Reds failed to capitalize, allowing Braga to seize the advantage.
The defeat leaves Nottingham Forest with a daunting task ahead, as they prepare to host Ferencvaros at the City Ground. A victory is imperative to keep their Europa League hopes alive and secure a place in the knockout stages. Dyche’s side will need to regroup and find the attacking impetus that was lacking in Braga to ensure progression in the competition.
