Liverpool’s recent 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield extended their unbeaten run to 12 games. However, the result did not fully satisfy the home supporters, who expressed their discontent with a smattering of boos at the final whistle. Despite dominating the game with 32 shots and an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.95, the Reds struggled to convert their chances, a recurring theme in recent matches. Manager Arne Slot’s tactical adjustments, particularly his decision to tighten the team’s defense since December, have impacted Liverpool’s attacking output.
Arne Slot said: “Our relationship? It’s as normal as it’s always been, with one exception and that was Inter. All the other games I’ve played him. He gave a very good performance when he came in after 20 minutes against Brighton before AFCON. We felt in the situation that was good for him and good for us because we beat Brighton. He went to AFCON and did what he usually does and scored goals, unfortunately Egypt couldn’t win, and now he’s back with us. I spoke to him today and I’m happy to have him back because this season I’ve only had two wingers who’ve played more than 100 minutes in the Premier League and that’s Mo and Cody.”
Slot continued: “Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz can also play in these positions but if I asked Florian what was his favourite position he wouldn’t say left or right wing. Jeremie would be the same, but he’s shown what he can do off the right side. To have Mo back is of course helpful because in his absence we’ve created a lot of chances and not always converted many. I saw today that Mo has 45 goals for Liverpool in the Champions League and the next highest is Virgil van Dijk with five.”
He added: “With Mo, I’m really happy and pleased that he’s back. In his absence I think we’ve done quite okay in terms of hardly conceding any chance. We start to create more and more – and if you start to create more and more, it’s really helpful to have a player like Mo Salah. Because if there’s ever been a player – I think there was one who scored more for this club – that can score goals and I can still play, I don’t think I can play Ian Rush still, then it’s really helpful to have him back.”
The return of Mohamed Salah from his African Cup of Nations (AFCON) duties marks a significant boost for Liverpool. Salah’s absence had been felt, especially in terms of goal conversion, as the team created numerous chances but struggled to find the back of the net consistently. Salah’s outspoken comments following his exclusion from the starting lineup in previous matches had stirred controversy, but clear-the-air talks with Slot have seemingly resolved any lingering issues.
As Liverpool prepares for their upcoming match at Marseille’s Orange Velodrome, all eyes will be on Salah to deliver a commanding performance and reaffirm his pivotal role in the squad. Slot’s remarks highlight the importance of Salah’s presence, not only for his goal-scoring prowess but also for the overall team dynamics. With key players like Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz available for selection, Slot has options, but Salah’s return is expected to provide the cutting edge Liverpool needs to turn their chances into goals.
