Arne Slot Manager
Liverpool’s recent 1-1 draw against Burnley at Anfield was overshadowed by significant developments in the transfer market and ongoing managerial speculations. The news of Marc Guehi’s transfer to Manchester City has left Liverpool fans reeling. The Crystal Palace captain completed his £20 million move to the Etihad, leaving the Reds to reflect on their failed pursuit of the England center-back.
Paul Joyce said: “The flipside of that is that Liverpool are not as attractive a proposition now as they were then for any player. City’s reputed wage offer of £300,000 a week, in addition to paying an initial £20m fee, was a deal Liverpool were unwilling to match financially.”
Liverpool’s interest in other players, such as Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga and Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven, has also been reported. However, these pursuits seem to be fraught with challenges. Camavinga was of genuine interest last December, but recent reports suggest that van de Ven is negotiating a new contract with Spurs. Meanwhile, The Athletic’s James Pearce has addressed the unrest among fans regarding manager Arne Slot’s performance. Despite the dissatisfaction, Pearce noted that the club’s owners, FSG, have no immediate plans to replace Slot.
James Pearce wrote: “Arne Slot retains the backing of the board despite fan unrest over poor performances and playing style.”
The managerial situation at Liverpool remains tense, with Xabi Alonso’s name frequently mentioned as a potential successor to Slot. Alonso, who led Bayer Leverkusen to an invincible domestic season, has expressed interest in managing Liverpool in the future. However, his timeline aligns with FSG’s preference to avoid a mid-season managerial change. This situation could lead to ongoing speculation unless Slot manages to turn the team’s fortunes around.
Alonso said: “There’s this bond with the English clubs, for sure with my former club, but at the moment this is my place. This is where I want to be.”
Additionally, Liverpool’s defensive options are under scrutiny, with Ibrahima Konate’s contract negotiations stalling. The former RB Leipzig defender has reportedly rejected revised proposals, believing he deserves to be among the Premier League’s best-paid defenders. The club remains hopeful of extending Konate’s stay, but contingency plans are necessary, with the potential need for new defensive signings this summer.
A TEAMtalk source said: “Talks went quite well over the international breaks in October and November, but since December and now, things have again stalled.”
Liverpool is also monitoring other potential signings, such as Ousmane Diao of FC Midtjylland, amidst reports of RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande being a target for top European clubs, including the Reds. The club’s transition phase is expected to continue into next season, with several key figures’ contracts nearing expiration, further complicating the situation at Anfield.
