Ezri Konsa Aston Villa
Aston Villa is facing a challenging period as they prepare for a crucial trip to Istanbul to face Fenerbahce, with injuries and transfer market difficulties adding to their woes. The latest setback came with John McGinn’s injury, compounding the club’s struggles as they attempt to strengthen Unai Emery’s squad following Donyell Malen’s departure to AS Roma. Despite these hurdles, Villa remains determined to bounce back and focus on upcoming fixtures.
Ezri Konsa said: “It’s a tough one to take. We expected to win but we know there’s no easy games in the Premier League. Their record away from home in the last six games has been good, they defended well, stopped our attacking threats quite well. It’s part of football, you win some, you lose some, but we have to make sure we bounce back. We lost here but we’ve got two games next week and we have to focus on that.”
Morgan Rogers said: “Going into last season, the focus was Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey. I was a newbie, or I hadn’t been there very long. No one really knows about me and I had a lot more space, I was given a lot more space to dribble and show what I am about. I think this season, I’ve had to be smarter and a bit cleverer because people know that when I get the ball, they associate me with running and taking people on. People are getting closer to me, so I’m trying to run off the ball more and affect the game in a different way. I don’t want to be one dimensional and that if you stop me dribbling I am then useless. So it’s about adapting.”
Villa’s transfer market challenges are highlighted by the financial constraints imposed by UEFA’s regulations, which have limited their ability to secure new signings. The club’s attempt to bring in Conor Gallagher on a loan with an obligation to buy reflects these restrictions. Additionally, negotiations for Tammy Abraham, targeted to replace Malen, have proven difficult. The financial disparity is evident when comparing Villa’s situation to clubs like Manchester City, who have the resources to sign players such as Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi.
The recent defeat to Everton ended Villa’s impressive 11-match home winning streak, further intensifying frustrations over financial limitations. Despite outperforming teams like Tottenham, Manchester United, and Chelsea in recent years, Emery has emphasized that Villa should not be viewed as top-six contenders due to the financial power of their rivals.
Villa now faces a nervous wait for updates on McGinn and Boubacar Kamara’s injuries. McGinn was seen walking without crutches or visible protection after the match, offering a glimmer of hope. Initial estimates suggest he could be sidelined for two to three weeks, with further tests planned.
As the club navigates this challenging period, the focus remains on returning to winning ways in their upcoming matches against Fenerbahce and Newcastle.
