Sophie Quirk delivered an impressive performance for AFC Bournemouth as they faced off against Manchester City in the Women’s Super League (WSL) during an FA Cup encounter. Despite a valiant effort, Bournemouth was ultimately defeated by the higher-level opposition. Quirk played a crucial role in the match, frequently tasked with advancing the ball from the Cherries’ half as they defended against City’s relentless attacks.
Sophie Quirk said: “We were working as a front two, as a pair. We knew it was going to be tough up against them. We were always going to be overloaded, but I think we made the most of it. We’ve had a few shots on goals who were just super proud of that.”
Quirk continued: “It was unbelievable. They’re the players you watch growing up, they’re players you watch on TV, they’re international players. So it was unbelievable to get on the same pitch as them and that’s the levels that obviously at the end of the day, that’s the levels you want to get to.”
Reflecting on the match, Quirk added: “Obviously at 1-0 at that point, we were doing really well. It’s just fine margins and obviously, that’s why they’re top of the WSL.”
Bournemouth managed to hold their own against the formidable City side for much of the first half. However, they fell behind after 18 minutes due to a header from Bunny Shaw. Despite this setback, the Cherries responded positively, maintaining their composure and resilience. Unfortunately, three quick goals from City in the final six minutes of the first half put the game out of reach for Bournemouth.
Quirk’s performance was a highlight for Bournemouth, as she and her teammate Markham worked tirelessly to relieve pressure and create opportunities. Her experience of playing against some of the world’s top players was both inspiring and educational, as she expressed her admiration for the international stars she faced.
Despite the loss and their exit from the FA Cup, Quirk emphasized the positives that Bournemouth could take from their performance. The team demonstrated determination and skill against a top-tier opponent, which will undoubtedly boost their confidence moving forward.
