Mikel Arteta Arsenal
Arsenal had a golden opportunity to strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League table, but a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest left them with only a narrow lead. Earlier in the day, Manchester City had suffered a defeat to Manchester United, presenting the Gunners with a chance to go nine points clear. However, Mikel Arteta’s side failed to capitalize on this opportunity, leaving the door open for Aston Villa to close the gap.
Mikel Arteta said: “Every week is an opportunity, obviously; and we want to win every game. If we would have done that, we would have been in a different position. But we made a step, a smaller one than the one that we wanted, but it’s a step.” Asked if he would like to be further ahead in the title race, Arteta added: “If we win every game, yes. But unfortunately, we haven’t won today, and the opportunity that we wanted to take, we haven’t managed to do that.”
The match against Forest was Arsenal’s second consecutive Premier League game without a goal, reflecting a dip in their attacking form. This result allowed Aston Villa the chance to reduce the gap to just three points with their upcoming match against Everton. However, Villa’s hopes were dashed when they suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat at home to Everton, courtesy of Thierno Barry’s decisive goal. The goal was initially disputed due to an offside call involving Harrison Armstrong, but the Premier League Match Centre confirmed the decision through VAR, stating that Armstrong interfered with an opponent from an offside position.
The draw leaves Arsenal still at the summit, but with Villa and City both on 43 points, the title race remains fiercely contested. Declan Rice, visibly frustrated by the dropped points, was seen expressing his disappointment after the match. The Gunners will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Manchester United next Sunday, a match that could prove pivotal in their quest for the title.
Arsenal’s next fixture will see them face Michael Carrick’s Manchester United, while Manchester City will play against Wolves. The Gunners will be keen to return to winning ways and maintain their lead at the top of the table.
