Sunderland celebrated a significant Premier League victory on Saturday, overcoming Crystal Palace in a thrilling encounter. The win marked their first league triumph since the Wear-Tyne derby, with Régis Le Bris commending his players’ maturity and resilience. Despite falling behind to Yeremy Pino’s first-half goal, Sunderland responded swiftly with an equalizer from Enzo Le Fee, before Brian Brobbey secured the win with a decisive second-half strike.
Régis Le Bris said: “Yeah, I think especially during the second half [we deserved it]. They started better than us, I think, created a couple of chances, found solutions to escape their hard pressure sometimes. They went long to Mateta, to Devenny for flick ons, directly in behind, so we struggled a bit in this part of the game. And progressively, I think we found solutions to solve those problems. We changed a few details at half time. I think we kept our midfielders a bit more connected in the middle, rather than overloading the sides. I think it helped for the build-up and the balance after the turnover.”
Le Bris added: “Yeah, it was a feeling shared with the bench today. We felt, first of all, that the players on the pitch were at their level. I think when you are just on the edge and you are working to solve the problem, you can give them time to go all the way. Sometimes when you make a change, you can disturb this dynamic. So it’s always a balance. It was a good decision in the end. Sometimes it’s not, but it was positive today.”
He continued: “It was a fight. Probably the defenders at the beginning had the best position to protect the goal. He struggled a bit at the beginning, but progressively, he imposed his power, his technique, his connection with his team-mates, and finally, this great finishing helped the team and the squad. I thought it was just a question of time. When you reach the point of exhaustion, it’s time to stop, but it wasn’t the case. So he probably got a bit tired, but it was the case for his direct opponent as well, so it was a balance. So when you are feeling that sometimes it’s a question of minutes just to have this opportunity, it was a good feeling.”
The match saw Sunderland initially struggle against Crystal Palace’s early dominance, with the visitors exploiting long balls to Jean-Philippe Mateta and Devenny. However, tactical adjustments at halftime, particularly in midfield connectivity, allowed Sunderland to regain control and balance. Le Bris’s decision to maintain his starting XI proved pivotal, as Brian Brobbey’s perseverance and skill ultimately overcame the defensive efforts of Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix. This victory not only boosts Sunderland’s confidence but also underscores their potential to compete effectively in the Premier League.
