Arne Slot Manager
Arne Slot, Liverpool’s manager, may soon face a critical decision regarding penalty duties as Mohamed Salah returns from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Salah’s Egypt suffered a disappointing end to their tournament, losing to Nigeria in a penalty shoot-out for the third-place play-off. Salah missed his spot-kick, adding to the challenges Slot must address as Liverpool prepares for their upcoming Champions League clash against Marseille.
Arne Slot said: “In my head, it wasn’t a boo but, in my head, it was frustration, as well. We are Liverpool and we play Burnley, who we have to give credit to how they defended, cleared balls off the line; all the things you want to see if you are a Burnley manager, players try to do everything that prevents us from scoring. I am the same and the players definitely have the same frustrations as the fans have.”
Liverpool’s recent form has been a mix of success and setbacks. Despite remaining unbeaten in their last 12 matches, half of those have ended in draws, leaving the team in the top four but with room for improvement. The recent 1-1 draw against Burnley at Anfield highlighted the ongoing challenges, with Dominik Szoboszlai missing a penalty during the match. Szoboszlai, who had previously bolstered his penalty record with a successful spot-kick against AC Milan, saw his attempt against Burnley hit the bar, compounding Liverpool’s penalty woes.
Slot now faces the task of deciding who will take penalties moving forward. While Salah is likely to resume his duties upon his return, the manager may consider alternatives if Salah’s form does not improve. Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike are potential candidates for penalty duties should Slot opt for a change.
The match against Burnley also saw Liverpool struggle to find a winner, with Ekitike’s late goal being disallowed for offside. The frustration was palpable among the Anfield faithful, with boos echoing at the final whistle. Slot addressed the fans’ reaction in his post-match press conference, acknowledging the shared frustrations between the players and supporters.
Arne Slot said: “Sometimes it is that we are scoring a goal in stoppage time and you expect to win the game and then you concede another goal in stoppage time. I think these games we have played quite a lot (nine defeats in 12 from September to November) where we are the team creating more than the team we face, but were losing those games. But yes, in football, one team can have two chances – one was almost an own goal for us – and score one goal when the other team has multiple chances and score just one goal as well – and then you get the result you get.”
As Liverpool looks to solidify their position in the league and in Europe, Slot’s ability to manage these challenges and make crucial decisions will be pivotal. The return of Salah and the potential reshuffling of penalty responsibilities could play a significant role in the team’s performance in the coming fixtures.
