Andy Cole Newcastle United
The Manchester derby is set to ignite passions once again as Manchester United and Manchester City prepare to face off. Former United striker Andy Cole has shared his insights on the pre-match atmosphere, having experienced both sides of the rivalry during his illustrious career. Cole, who spent nearly seven years at Old Trafford, achieved significant success, including winning the Treble. His transfer from Newcastle to United for a then-record fee of £6 million marked a pivotal moment in his career. However, Cole later moved to Blackburn Rovers for a larger fee and eventually joined Manchester City in 2005. Reflecting on his career post-retirement, Cole expressed regret over leaving United too soon.
Andy Cole said: “[Sir Alex] told me that I didn’t have to go, he didn’t want me to go. I could have stayed for as long as I could and I would get my games. In the end, he just said, ‘Okay, I understand, and I know what you are like, I will let you go’. The crazy thing is that he sold me for £7 million, which is more than what he paid for me – he got me for £6m. So I remember that last meeting with him like it was yesterday. I really enjoyed my time, but I left far too early. That is my only regret.”
Cole continued: “The fact I had played for United and had such a good time there was on my mind when I considered City’s offer, I cannot lie. When you’ve been at a club for so long and you have achieved so much with that club, I mean I achieved things at United that I never believed I would, then you close it and move on and end up at their rivals then of course it crosses your mind. I had a great time at United, but that came to an end, and now this is a new chapter.”
Cole’s reflections highlight the emotional complexity of his career decisions. Despite his success at United, his move to City marked a new chapter, one that he approached with both excitement and reflection. His comments underscore the lasting impact of his time at United and the significant role the club played in his career. As the Manchester derby approaches, Cole’s insights offer a unique perspective on the rivalry and the personal journeys of players who navigate the intense world of Premier League football.
