Xabi Alonso has stepped down as the manager of Real Madrid, leaving the position by mutual consent after the team’s defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona. The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder’s exit marks the end of a tenure that had been under scrutiny due to a series of disappointing results and alleged tensions within the squad. Alvaro Arbeloa, a former teammate of Alonso at both Liverpool and Real Madrid, has been swiftly appointed as his successor.
Alvaro Arbeloa said: “And it was just minutes before the official announcement was released. Obviously, yesterday I spoke with Xabi. Everybody here knows the relationship and friendship that I share with him: how much I appreciate him, how much I love him. I know as well that it’s mutual, it has been mutual and it will continue to be mutual.”
Despite only losing five games since the start of the domestic season, Alonso faced mounting pressure following a 4-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final last summer and a challenging run of two wins in eight games. These results, coupled with rumors of a rift between Alonso and his players, contributed to his decision to leave the club. Arbeloa, in his first press conference as manager, emphasized the need for a fresh start while maintaining the club’s objectives for the season.
Arbeloa said: “It’s a new start for everyone, but a continuation of the objectives that we have for this season. And above all else is the next game against Albacete tomorrow. We are conscious that we have to win and of the difficulty that a knockout game entails, and I think the players are looking forward to it. I’ve seen that, despite how much they’ve already worked, they’ve shown me their excitement to have a great season and for things to go well for us.”
Arbeloa’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to stabilize the team and build on the existing objectives set for the season. His relationship with Alonso is expected to facilitate a smooth transition, although Arbeloa is keen to establish his own identity as a manager. The upcoming match against Albacete in the Copa del Rey will be a crucial test for Arbeloa as he seeks to inspire confidence and success in his squad.
