Michael Carrick Manchester United
Manchester United is set to appoint Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season. Following Ruben Amorim’s departure, Carrick emerged as the leading candidate for the role, surpassing former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The decision comes after initial discussions with the United hierarchy, with Carrick’s appointment expected to be finalized on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney, Carrick’s former Old Trafford teammate, has offered his support to assist in the coaching setup.
Wayne Rooney said: “Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer. I’m not begging a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Whether Michael goes in or if that’s Fletch [Darren Fletcher] or John O’Shea or myself, it needs people who know the football club. Roy Keane – I know Roy has had his opinions, I said about Roy going in earlier in the season. Having people who know the club, who care for the club and understand what it takes to be a Manchester United player – that’s where the club needs to be.”
Rooney continued: “The club has lost its identity, it’s lost that family feel, if you like. Whether it’s Ole [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] or Michael, this is an opportunity to bring that back, bring the spirit of Manchester United back to the football club.”
The decision to appoint Carrick comes after Solskjaer, initially the favorite for the interim role, faced opposition from several players who expressed their lack of confidence in his return. This led to the club officials blocking Solskjaer’s potential comeback, paving the way for Carrick’s appointment. Carrick, who has been without a club since leaving Middlesbrough last June, is seen as a figure capable of guiding the team through the remainder of the campaign.
Darren Fletcher, who served as caretaker manager during United’s recent fixtures, including a 2-2 draw against Burnley and a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton, is expected to step aside for Carrick. Carrick’s first test as interim manager will be the highly anticipated Manchester derby against City this weekend.
Carrick’s appointment is viewed as an opportunity to restore Manchester United’s identity and bring back the spirit that the club has been missing. His familiarity with the club’s culture and values, along with potential support from former players like Rooney, could prove instrumental in stabilizing the team during this transitional phase.
