Leeds United
Leeds United is set to honor the memory of their former midfielder, Terry Yorath, ahead of their upcoming match against Fulham at Elland Road. Yorath, who passed away recently at the age of 75, was a significant figure in the club’s history, having played for the Whites for nine years from 1967. The club has declined Derby’s offer for a tribute, opting instead to pay their respects to Yorath during their home fixture.
Yorath’s children said: “To most he was a revered footballing hero, but to us he was Dad; a quiet, kind and gentle man. The Cardiff-born footballer is survived by daughters Gabby and Louise, son Jordan, and five grandchildren: Reuben, Lois, Mila, Phoenix, and Paloma.”
Leeds United stated: “Leeds United are devastated to learn the news that club legend Terry Yorath has passed away, aged 75. Everyone at Leeds United will remember Terry fondly on and off pitch, and we are devastated by his passing. He will always be a club legend and we offer our sincerest condolences to his friends and family. Marching on Together, always.”
Yorath’s career was marked by numerous achievements, including earning 59 caps for Wales and captaining the national team 41 times. During his time with Leeds United, he helped the team clinch the First Division title in 1974 and appeared in the finals of the FA Cup, European Cup, and Cup Winners Cup. His legacy extends beyond Leeds, having played for clubs such as Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Bradford City, before concluding his playing career at Swansea City.
Following his retirement as a player, Yorath transitioned into management, taking roles at Swansea, Wales, Bradford, Cardiff, Lebanon, Sheffield Wednesday, and Margate. He was notably close to leading Wales to the 1994 World Cup and successfully guided Swansea to promotion from the Fourth Division in 1988. His time at Bradford was marked by the tragic Valley Parade fire in 1985, where he served as player-coach and was present during the disaster that claimed 56 lives and injured 270 others.
As Leeds United prepares to honor Yorath, the club and its supporters reflect on the impact he had both on and off the pitch. His contributions to football and his legacy as a club legend will be remembered fondly by all associated with Leeds United.
