Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank has addressed the recent controversy surrounding Cristian Romero’s social media activity. Following Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth, Romero took to Instagram to express his frustration, calling out certain individuals within the club. Despite the backlash, Frank has confirmed that Romero will continue as the team’s captain and will not face any fines.
Thomas Frank said: “He is our captain, he’s not been fined. It’s an internal thing, but we haven’t done that. I think there are a lot of ways to deal with different situations.”
Romero’s post, which was later edited to remove the phrase “tell a few lies,” conveyed a strong message about accountability and the need for collective effort. The Argentine defender emphasized the importance of unity, stating that the team must “keep facing up to it and trying to turn the situation around, for ourselves and for the club.” He also highlighted the tendency of some individuals to only appear during successful times, urging his teammates to remain focused and work harder.
Cristian Romero said: “We are responsible, there’s no doubt about that. I am the first. But we will keep facing up to it and trying to turn the situation around, for ourselves and for the club. They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies. We’ll stay here, working, sticking together and giving our all to turn things around. Especially at times like this, keeping quiet, working harder and moving forward all together, is part of football. All together, it will be easier.”
This is not the first instance of Romero expressing dissatisfaction with the club’s hierarchy. In June, following the sacking of former manager Ange Postecoglou and Frank’s appointment, Romero posted a supportive message to Postecoglou, acknowledging the challenges faced during his tenure.
Frank, along with Spurs’ technical director Johan Lange, held discussions with Romero regarding his recent post. The head coach reiterated the importance of dealing with such situations internally and learning from past experiences. Frank also referenced a previous incident involving Yves Bissouma, emphasizing the need for consistency in handling disciplinary matters.
Thomas Frank said: “Yes, of course. I’ve done that before with people being late, there was the [Yves] Bissouma situation. You talk about having to draw a line, I think if it’s the exact, same situation that they do. You can make a mistake, but don’t make the same mistake twice.”
The decision to retain Romero as captain reflects Frank’s confidence in the defender’s leadership qualities and his commitment to fostering a cohesive team environment. As Tottenham navigates through challenging times, the emphasis remains on unity and resilience to overcome the obstacles ahead.
