David Moyes
In a dramatic Premier League encounter, Everton faced Wolverhampton Wanderers in a match that was finely poised until a controversial VAR intervention in the 83rd minute. The incident led to referee Thomas Kirk being called to the pitch-side monitor, where he reviewed a decision that resulted in Everton’s Michael Keane receiving a straight red card. The replays showed Keane seemingly pulling the hair of Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare during a tussle for the ball at the halfway line, with the score tied at 1-1.
David Moyes said: “It is not violent, it is not forceful and it is not deliberate. So all of those things I have said mean it shouldn’t have been a red card.”
Moyes was visibly frustrated with the decision, arguing that the intervention by VAR was unwarranted for what he perceived as an innocuous incident. He further expressed his discontent with the situation:
David Moyes continued: “I think it was a really poor decision to send him to the screen in the first place. [Chelsea player Marc] Cucurella got his hair pulled – violent conduct, a deliberate action, no problem with that. I have been a centre half and there is no way I am jumping to outjump a big centre forward and think: ‘By the way I am going to outjump him and at the same time I am going to pull his hair.’”
The Everton manager questioned the logic behind the decision, suggesting that it was implausible for a player to intentionally pull an opponent’s hair while attempting to win a header. Moyes labeled the decision as “ridiculous” and criticized both the referee and VAR for their roles in the incident.
Everton had initially taken the lead through a first-half goal from Michael Keane, who later came close to doubling the advantage by hitting the post with a header. The red card incident significantly impacted the game’s dynamics, leaving Everton to finish the match with ten men.
The decision has sparked a debate over the consistency and application of VAR in the Premier League, with Moyes’s comments highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding its use. This incident adds to the growing list of contentious VAR decisions that have influenced match outcomes, prompting calls for a review of its implementation.
